IPL 2023 Format and New Rules - All Exclusive Details

  • Mark your calendars for March 31 as Gujarat Titans take on Chennai Super Kings to commence the IPL 2023!
  • The 16th edition of the cricketing extravaganza is set to be a tad distinct from its predecessors.

Cricket enthusiasts, the wait is finally over! IPL 2023 is all set to kick off on March 31, and we can't wait to witness some action-packed matches.

The first game of the season will see the defending champions, Gujarat Titans, locking horns with Chennai Super Kings at the magnificent Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad.

As always, ten top-notch teams will be battling it out in the world's biggest and most lucrative cricket league. However, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has thrown in a few tweaks to the rules and format of IPL 2023, making it an even more exciting affair.

Folks, the BCCI has announced some significant changes for the IPL 2023 that are sure to make this season a thrilling one. The home and away system of matches has been restored, and the ten teams have been split into two groups of five.

Each team will play a total of 14 league-stage matches, consisting of seven home and seven away games. The tournament will run for a whopping 52 days and take place across 12 venues.

Let's take a glance at the other crucial alterations made by BCCI for the much-awaited tournament.

1) DRS to be used for assessing wide and no balls.

The upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will witness the introduction of a novel rule that allows players to challenge wide and no-ball decisions made by the on-field umpires.

The Decision Review System (DRS) will be employed to facilitate this new provision, which was first introduced in the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023.

The Mumbai Indians' skipper, Harmanpreet Kaur, made history in the WPL opener by becoming the first captain to employ the benefit of this rule.

The implementation of the DRS system for wide and no-ball decisions is expected to bring a new dimension of fairness to the highly-anticipated IPL 2023.

2) The adoption of ‘Impact Player’ Rule.

In a move to spice up the action in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the introduction of a new 'Impact Player' rule.

Under this rule, each team will be permitted to substitute one of their on-field players with any of the four substitutes at any given point in the match. However, once substituted, the player cannot take any further part in the game, not even as a substitute fielder.

It's worth noting that if a team fields four foreign players in their playing eleven, then the impact player must be an Indian.

This new regulation is expected to add an exciting element of strategy and surprise to the tournament and will undoubtedly make for an even more captivating viewing experience for cricket fans across the world.
