Who Have Been The Stars Of The 2020/21 Big Bash?

Once again, the Big Bash in Australia did not fail to deliver. There were fireworks throughout the T20 competition, and that was not just during the break between the two innings.

With so many of the world’s leading T20 players involved in the tournament, it was no surprise that we saw some exceptional performances with the bat, ball and in the field.

Here is a look at who the standout players were across the nine weeks.

Alex Hales

No player scored more runs in the 2020/21 Big Bash than Alex Hales. The Englishman finished the competition with 543 runs in what was his best campaign to date in the Australia league.

Hales opened the batting for the Sydney Thunder alongside Usman Khawaja. It was the man from England who shone the most, with some explosive innings, the best of which was his 110 off 56 balls against the Sydney Sixers.

On the back of his performances in Australia, Hales is going to be a player who is sought after in the T20 leagues around the world. He is set to enter the auction for the IPL this year and he could end up being one of the most expensive players off the board.

Jhye Richardson

Jhye Richardson reminded the Australian selectors how dangerous he can be with the ball in the Big Bash where he picked up 27 wickets, the most in the competition. The scorchers man was vital in helping Perth reach the final as he consistently picked up wickets at crucial moments in matches.

The former Bradman Young Player of the Year returned to domestic cricket after double shoulder surgery. He showed no signs of any more problems as his speed and line were too much to handle for most batsmen in the tournament.

Richardson has played just two Test matches for the Baggy Green. He will be hoping to be added to the squad for the series against England later this year. Australia are the 1.53 favourites for the next Ashes and with Richardson added to their strong bowling attack, they will take some beating on home soil.

Josh Philippe

Wicket-keeper batsman Josh Philippe was named the Player of the Tournament in the Big Bash this year so there is no way we could exclude him from this list.

The 24-year-old produced a match-winning performance in the final for the Sixers last season following an excellent campaign. He has followed that up with another brilliant tournament. Only Hales scored more runs than the Australian this season.

Philippe, who also features in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore, is a player who is sure to feature for his country in T20 cricket later in 2021. He will have an eye on breaking into the team before the World Cup in India in October. Many pundits see him as the Baggy Green’s next opening batsman in limited-overs cricket. He could make his debut against New Zealand alongside Aaron Finch later this month.

The Big Bash will be back again in October in what will be the 11th season of the hugely successful domestic cricket competition.

IPL 2025: Rajasthan Royals to Welcome Rahul Dravid as New Head Coach

Rahul Dravid prepares to take on the head coach role for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2025 season.  The 52-year-old, who recently coached India to their T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, is set to return to the Royals, a team he captained in 2012 and 2013 and mentored until 2015. Dravid's connection with the Royals runs deep. His leadership during his playing days and subsequent mentorship laid a strong foundation for the franchise. His return as head coach brings a wealth of experience, especially after his successful stint as India's head coach, where he was instrumental in guiding a new generation of cricketers. End of an Era: Southee to Retire from Tests After England Tour

Tim Southee, New Zealand’s prolific paceman and all-time leading wicket-taker across formats, has announced the third Test against England could be his final appearance in red-ball cricket.  If New Zealand qualifies for the World Test Championship (WTC) final next year, he may make himself available for one last hurrah. Southee, 35, will have a fitting end to his career at Seddon Park, Hamilton, his home ground. Reflecting on his 18-year journey, he expressed gratitude, saying, “To play such a big series against the team I began my Test career against and at grounds so special to me is the perfect way to bow out.” The veteran has struggled recently, managing only three wickets on the spin-friendly pitches in India. He relinquished the Test captaincy to Tom Latham on that tour, underscoring his commitment to a gradual transition. Coach Gary Stead praised Southee’s endurance and competitive spirit, calling him “an incredibly tough competitor.” New Zealand have named a 14-man squad fo...
