Betting on the IPL 2020 Tournament

There are quite a few ways in which people bet on cricket matches. Right from the toss to scoring number of runs to winning the match, bets are placed on every aspect of the game. People bet on who will win the toss, score more runs in the powerplay, who will hit a greater number of boundaries, which player will be the top performer, who will take more wickets and eventually who will win the game or even who will win the entire tournament. There are multiple such bets and bets in any size can be made. In India, while it is legally banned to bet or gamble in any kind of sport, there are multiple sites where bets can be placed.

With the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) coming up, the hype and the curiosity on the bets have increased. One of the most popular pre-tournament bets is on who will win the IPL title this year. Each of the eight teams have been listed at a bet price and the amount invested is multiplied by that bet price which gives the return or the winning amount. Say, for example, Team A is listed at a bet price of 6.00. If a person bets INR 100 on Team A, then he/she will win INR 600 in return.

Thus, here are the bets (from bet365) of the eight IPL teams for the 2020 season of the IPL. Mumbai Indians (MI) have the lowest bet as they are the favourites to win the title. They have a well-balanced side and boast of a powerful squad. Hence, they are listed at a bet price of 5.00. Sunrisers Hyderabad have a bet price of 5.50. They have a quality line-up. While they do have some middle-order concerns but overall, they seem to form a gun T20 line-up.

Meanwhile, every year, even when the odds are against them, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) somehow find a way to come out on top. They’ve made it to the top four in every season they’ve played. The magic of MS Dhoni and CSK invariably tends to work. Thus, they are listed at a bet price of 6.00. Delhi Capitals (DC) are up next and have a bet value of 7.00. A change in name worked wonders last season as they finished third and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2012. Moreover, they have a strong Indian core which is a key component of any IPL side.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) flatter to deceive season after season and they’ve finished last twice in the last three years. Yet, there is hope every year. This year is no different and the three-time finalists are placed at a bet of 8.00. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have the same bet rate as RCB i.e. 8.00. They have blown hot and cold slightly over the last few seasons. After finishing third in 2018, they lost six games in a row in the mid-phase of the 2019 season and eventually finished fifth.

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) round up these bet rates with 10.00 each. KXIP have been another side that has disappointed on a regular basis. They have started well in the last two seasons but falter in the second half. Meanwhile, not many rate RR highly but they might prove to be the dark horse alongside KXIP this time around.
