Could the T20 World Cup Be Cancelled?

This is a question every cricket fan would love to ask, but it is also a question we don’t want to hear the answer to. For those that have eagerly been waiting in anticipation for one of the biggest cricket events to take place every 2 years, there is a very good chance that you may have to wait another year before the tournament does indeed kick off.

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus, the sporting industry has taken quite the knock, yet there seems to be much hope according to hushed whispers and articles based on T20 World Cup winner tips, it is evident that there are sources that remain afloat with a positive outlook.



However, as it currently stands, all matches have been postponed until further notice and all massive sport events have been put on hold. The worrisome question is when it will be possible to return to normal as only then will such events begin to become a reality again. So let's take a look at why it could be possible for the tournament to be called off should things not improve not just in India, but around the world.

The Supporters


The T20 World Cup attracts supporters from every corner of the world. The Coronavirus, however, has left no country untouched and some countries are feeling the effects of the virus more than others. This has led to selected countries having stronger restrictions and being unable to fly is one of them.

Though there has been very little activity in the sky since the world entered a lockdown, there has been hope that those who need to get home are able to. A small majority of people were able to do so, however, it remains to be seen if the rest of the world will be able to travel to get to the tournament.

The Team Players


Should the supporters not be able to travel, it is highly unlikely that the team players will. In the unlikely event that special permission has been granted by each of the countries participating in the T20 World Cup, there may be players who are unknowingly affected by the Coronavirus and that alone may be enough to put a travel ban on countries, forbidding team players departures from their home countries.


Countries Affected


The T20 World Cup 2020 was to be the 7th tournament of its class and is held at the Melbourne Cricket ground. The event was to take place from the 18th of October 2020 and go into November, ending on the 15th.

Australia, however, was one of the strictest of countries when the Coronavirus hit Australian shores and it's difficult to gauge whether or not the country will so quickly allow travellers from around the globe entrance to its airports, welcoming the virus back into the country and risking infection yet again.

While countries around the world work together in lockdown, forbidding international travel and closing sports events, business and franchises, it’s hard to say whether or not the T20 World Cup will take place in 2020. However, for the optimists and those that prefer to hear only the good in such a time of devastation, the show must go on and even if the T20 is cancelled for the year of 2020, there is every hope that it will return and steal the show in 2021.

If international travel is banned until 2023, there is a chance that only when the international travel ban is lifted, will the event commence meaning only in a few years’ time? Experts believe, that given the right treatment and in hopes of finding a cure for the virus, that the earth should be restored to its full glory within a year.

For now, however, it's all speculation and countries are simply trying to stay ahead of the crisis and keep citizens safe. Only time will tell when the T20 World will be held, but one thing is for sure, the show must go on!
