Alex Hales ranked as the number-one T20 batsman by the ICC

England cricketer Alex Hales has been ranked as the number-one Twenty20 batsman by the International Cricket Council. The rankings were updated after England's victory against Australia in August. Nottinghamshire's Hales hit 94 off 61 balls, helping England to a 27-run victory that levelled the two match series at 1-1.

New Zealand's Brandon McCullum has dropped down to second in the rankings with Australia's Watson and Warner in 3rd and 4th place respectively. Australia's Aaron Finch, who played a big part in the series against England, made sure his performance didn't go unnoticed, as he moved into the top 20 rankings for the first time in his playing career.

Alex Hales was born in Hillingdon, Middlesex and comes from a family full of sporting history. His father was a highly successful cricketer regularly breaking league records, while his grandfather took tennis great, Rod Laver, to five sets in a Wimbledon qualifier.

The world number one made his name in the Minor Counties League for Buckinghamshire, before being spotted by Nottinghamshire in 2007. His position in the county's first XI was all but secured in 2009 and Hales became one of the first names on the team sheet for England's Twenty20 side by 2011.

Hales will be hoping to feature in next season's Indian Premier League after talks with Nottinghamshire, who prevented him from taking part in 2013. Last year's competition clashed with the start of the county's domestic season and they would have been careless to allow one of their star players to be absent. Hales has spoken out in the press that he expects permission to enter the next IPL player auction in February. During the auction there is no doubt that the franchises will be fighting to get his signature, as a player of his standard could easily create a feared and successful IPL team.

Despite Alex Hales success in the Twenty20, he has been struggling break into the four-day game, something that he is keen to work on. The world number one has already stated his desire to be known as a well-rounded player in all the games rather than just a Twenty20 player.
